  Pictorialism was a movement of the late nineteenth century created to elevate the medium of photography like painting or sculpture.

  The purpose of Pictorialists was to make the manual and the aesthetic sense necessary to make photography a work comparable to that of the major arts.

 Influenced by the movement of Impressionism, the Pictorialists dropped out in favor of open spaces, to better capture the spirit and the light of nature [...].
